Magnesium
formula: Mg; CAS Registry Number: 7439-95-4
Naturally occurring non-toxic alkaline earth metal
Magnesium is a widespread earth alkaline metal. Due to its high reactivity it naturally occurs only as salt and as ion. The metal and its compounds are used mainly in metal working industries, pyrotechnics and pharmaceutical industry.
For plants, animals and humans magnesium is an essential element with multiple functions. Magnesium levels are therefore strictly regulated by homeostasis in animals and humans. Its toxicity is low. More common is Mg-deficiency.
