Unterhalb Saalemündung
Downriver Saale mouth
Sub-area downstream of the confluence of the rivers Saale and Mulde
The sub-area lies in the river section Middle Elbe where the river flows to the northwest. The river bed is gently descending. It has the character of a lowland river with extensive floodplains and backwaters with temporary or permanent connection to the stream.
No transverse structures hinder the flow of the Elbe. Nevertheless, the river here is strongly modified by embankments, groynes, and revetments. The natural structures of the river with wide valleys and branching and shifts of the stream course during floods and low water have been strongly altered.
