A versatile solvent classified as reproductive toxicant

The sum of import and export of N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) in and into Europe is estimated to be between 10,000 and 100,000 tons. NMP is used as solvent in the production of polymers, paints, semiconductor materials and batteries. Another important field of use is as cleaning agent to remove plastic, oil and paints.

Because of NMPs toxic effects (shown in the rat after oral and inhalative intake) NMP was classified as reproductive toxicant in 2009. In 2011 NMP was included in the candidate list for authorization as a substance of very high concern by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).
