National Park

Clearly defined area protected against human interventions and environmental pollution by precautionary measures. A greater part of the area must meet the requirements of a nature reserve.

The 13 German National Parks cover an area of about 7.300 km2 most of which is North Sea mudflats and Baltic bodden. Only about 1.000 km2 are land area.
According to the German Federal Nature Conservation Act specific parts of nature and landscape may be assigned a nature reserve, national park, protected landscape, national landmark or nature park.
