Glyphosate - more details

Risk assessment and state of approval

The risk assessment of glyphosate for people and the environment is currently under discussion. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the substance as probably carcinogenic to humans (Group 2A). In contrast, the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) found no evidence of carcinogenicity, reproductive harmful or teratogeniceffects. In their revaluation the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) follows the BfR assessment and classifies glyphosate as probably not carcinogenic to humans.
Due to the discrepancies in hazard assessment the authorization of glyphosate in the EU is currently under discussion. In Germany, the agricultural use of glyphosate is restricted to two applications per area and year and a total of 3.6 kg per hectare per year since 2014.

At the beginning of 2017, the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety, within the framework of the licensing of glyphosate-containing plant protection products, further restricted the application possibilities for non-professional users.
